At Meadowcroft, our team is devoted to providing exceptional care and support, ensuring that every resident’s transition into our home is smooth, positive, and enriching. We understand that choosing the right care home can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

To help guide you through this important decision, we’ve compiled some helpful tips below. From understanding your care needs to visiting potential homes, these steps can make the process clearer and more manageable for you and your family.

1

What type of care you are looking for?

The best way to do this is to get a free care needs assessment done through your local council. Depending on the level of your needs, you may need either Residential or Nursing Care.

2

How will you pay for your care?

A deciding factor in which care homes you can choose from will be affordability. If you have over a certain amount in capital and assets, you will have to fund your care yourself. If you have under that amount, your care will be funded by the local authority.

What are your priorities in a finding a home for you or your loved one?

  • Location – do you want to stay in your current community, be close to family or move somewhere completely different, like by the sea?
  • Will you be able to continue to attend current social activities or hobbies? Does the home have dedicated activities coordinators? Are residents encouraged to stay fit and active?
  • Space – does the home provide good space, are the rooms ensuite? Are the communal areas welcome and set up for small group interactions? Is there a lift and good accessibility throughout the home. Is it warm and well decorated?
  • Food – is there a varied and nutritious menu and is this cooked fresh on-site? Are there snacks available, and can the home meet your dietary needs?
  • Faith and religion – does the home have regular interaction with local faiths and can you be supported to carry on your faith in a way that you wish?
  • Are you a member of the LGBTQ+ community and how will a care home support you?
  • Can you bring your own furniture and personalise your room? Once you move in, it will be your home!

Take a look around at different homes

Gather information on the homes by looking at inspection rating and reviews. It’s worth asking for a copy of the contract and asking questions on any elements you don’t understand.
